Crying, Cry-It-Out, and Related Issues

When my eldest was a baby, I remember feeling so torn when she cried during the night. Our pediatrician and my mother both said that it was okay to let her cry for a while and let her learn to go back to sleep. But as I listened to her cry, I wondered: Will this make her too stressed? Will it damage her emotionally? Will it ruin our relationship? Claire McCarthy, MD
The study, which was published in the journal Pediatrics on Tuesday, found that babies who were left to "cry it out" in order to fall asleep were dozing off almost 15 minutes faster than the control group of babies whose parents were given no instructions on how to help their child fall asleep.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of behavioral interventions on the sleep/wakefulness of infants, parent and infant stress, and later child emotional/behavioral problems, and parent-child attachment.
If only my baby could talk instead of cry I would know what she wants,” said Janet, a new mother of a fussy baby. “Your baby can talk,” we advised. “The key is for you to learn how to listen. When you learn the special language of your baby’s cry, you will be able to respond sensitively. Here are some listening tips that will help you discover what your baby is trying to say when he cries.
This is an artical by Janet Lansbury. "These experts agree that crying is the primary manner in which babies communicate, and we must, without question, respond to our baby’s cries. As Magda Gerber notes in Dear Parent: Caring For Infants With Respect: “Crying must be responded to. But how is a more complicated issue. To follow the advice, “do not let your baby cry,” is practically impossible. At times the harder a mother or father tries to stop the baby’s crying, the more anxious everyone becomes.”
